Surprisingly, although Maurizio Anzeri is very successful and well-known in London, where he lives and in Italy, where the artist is from, the artist has never had an exhibition in Germany. It is therefore our great pleasure to be showing Maurizio Anzeri’s multilayered graphic and sculptural work during the Quadriennale 2010 this autumn as part of “Deutschlandpremieren” (German premieres), where 30 galleries in Düsseldorf are simultaneously presenting the works of artists who have not yet had their work on show in Germany.

Maurizio Anzeri manipulates vintage photographs with coloured embroidery. Faces are often completely masked with embroidered nets. Upon closer inspection, this sometimes seemingly eerie embroidery reveals itself as the meticulous and affectionate attempt to keep forgotten people from insignificance and anonymity.

Maurizio Anezeri was born in 1969 in the small town Loano in Liguria. The artist studied at Camberwell College of Arts in London between 1996 and 1999. He was shortlisted for the renowned Sovereign European Art Prize in 2008 and his works can be found in numerous public and private international collections.
